The broad sweep of winter holiday traditions yields a wealth of music to warm the heart and soul. Join Masterworks Choral Ensemble December 2 at the Washington Center for the Performing Arts as the group honors the full range of winter festivities from Christmas and Winter Solstice to Hanukkah and Kwanzaa. The title, Season of Light, embraces winter holiday traditions that bring the glow of light into the longest nights of the year with music including “Light the Kinara for Kwanzaa” and “The Chanukah Song, We Are Lights”. You’ll also hear beloved traditional holiday music such as “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas”, and more contemporary treasures like “Joyful, Joyful” from the movie Sister Act 2. MCE can’t resist bringing humor into every concert so you can look forward to hearing “I Want to Stare at My Phone with You” and “Christmas Chopsticks” among others.
Continuing the tradition of collaborating with invited choirs, students from accompanist’s Angi Swan’s Olympic View Elementary 5th grade choir Soaring Eagle Singers will share the stage, performing two songs, including one arranged by Angi. You’ll also have spirited opportunities to join the choir in song, with 4 sing-alongs of enduring favorites.
Masterworks has long supported young musicians through its annual Youth Music Competition. This concert features Saud Maya Dirar. A 14 year old eighth grader at Aspire Middle School for the Performing Arts, Saud has played violin since 4th grade studying under teacher Ludmila Henderson. Saud takes part in her school’s 8th grade Chamber Orchestra and is the youngest member this year of SOGO, Student Orchestras of Greater Olympia.
You can always count on Masterworks to sing beautiful choral music from the stage. But double that experience because the choir also puts on a great show. So prepare to be entertained as you ring in the holidays December 2 with joyful music, an evening of celebration with family and friends – and the joy of singing along.
The concert begins at 7:30pm. Tickets are $22 adults, $18 seniors and students, $10 youth. Purchase tickets online at Masterworks’ secure website MCE.org; by phone at Washington Center Box Office, 360-753- 8586; at washingtoncenter.org., as well as at the Washington Center Box Office, 512 Washington Street SE, Olympia.
